  • Steeplechase Career

In 2015, Avinash Sable participated in inter-army cross-country running at the urging of his colleagues. Later, he shifted his focus to steeplechase with the guidance of trainer Amrish Kumar. In March 2019, Sable established a new national record of 8:28.94 at the Federation Cup held in Patiala, which secured his entry into the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships. This achievement also earned him a place in the IAAF World Championships in Doha, where he became the first Indian male steeplechaser since Deena Ram in 1991 to participate in the event. In his first international event, the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships held in Doha, Avinash Sable secured the silver medal with a remarkable timing of 8:30.19. At the 2019 World Championships, Sable broke his own national record by clocking 8:25.23 in the heats. He then went on to set a new national record with an even better timing of 8:21.37 in the final.

At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Sable competed in the 3000 meters steeplechase and placed seventh in the heats, setting a new national record of 8:18.12. During 2022, Avinash Sable achieved two more national records, first at the Indian Grand Prix with a timing of 8:16.21 and then at the Meeting International Mohamed VI in Rabat with a timing of 8:12.48. In addition to his success in steeplechase, Sable has been setting new records in other long-distance running events as well. In his second race, he broke the 30-year-old national record in the men’s 5000m with a time of 13:25.65s at the Sound Running Track Meet in San Juan Capistrano, USA, in 2022. The previous record was set in Birmingham in 1992 by Bahadur Singh with a time of 13:29.70s. In 2023, Sable improved his time even further, clocking in at 13:19.30s at the Sound Running On Track Fest in LA. 

He also holds the national record in the half marathon with an incredible time of 1:00:30s, which he achieved at the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020. It is worth mentioning that Sable is the only Indian athlete to have completed a half marathon in less than 61 minutes.
